About the Tours
The educational tours of the Kailua Ahupua‘a and Kawai Nui Marsh are offered to inform residents and visitors about Hawaiian archaeological, historic, and ecological resources of the marsh. There are also service learning trips for elementary through college age student to various sites around the marsh. The tour groups meet at Ulupō Heiau next to the Windward Kailua YMCA at 8:30 AM and walk as well as car pool to various sites. Return is usually back at the Windward YMCA by 1:00 PM. A donation of $5.00 for non-members and $3.00 for members will be accepted for each tour. Monies collected are used to support the cultural and ecological restoration work in Kawai Nui Marsh. Group size will usually be limited to 25 persons. Note that tours are scheduled for Saturday mornings. Tour dates are subject to availability of tour leaders and may be changed. The schedule is posted (and is regularly updated) below. Call Chuck "Doc" Burrows (for more information and to register for these educational tours) at Phone: 595-3922 /or/ email: ahahui@ahahui.net |
Rick Barboza, co-owner of Hui Ku Maoli Ola a native plant nursery, will conduct a tour of native plantings in and around Kawai Nui Marsh on Saturday February 3 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. On site visits will be to Ulupo Heiau and Na Pohaku O Hauwahine where native plant restoration projects have taken place for the past 11 years. The tour will involve car-pooling and walking to different areas in Kawai Nui Marsh and ending at the Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery in Kaneohe where plants can be purchased and questions answered about plant propagation. We hope to limit the number of participants to 25 and car-pooling will be encouraged for this field trip. A donation fee of $5 for non-members and $3 for members (of either Kawai Nui Heritage Foundation or `Ahahui Mālama i ka Lōkahi) is appreciated. The donations are used to support the restoration projects and education programs at Nā Pōhaku O Hawahine and Ulupō Heiau. Please contact Chuck "Doc" Burrows at 595-3922 or email chuckb@hawaii.rr.com to be registered for the tour.
